It came to me this morning - how and where to fit the batteries. It uses up a little more space than I'd like but it's a good solution. They go right behind the forward bulkhead to the cabin and it can fit 1 group 27 battery or up to 3 group UL1 the ones used in golfcarts and wheelchairs. Sometimes you just need to stop thinking and let your subconscious take over!
